Why I Created Portraits Made Simple
I've always been fascinated by portrait paintings. Whenever I go to a gallery or an exhibit, I always find myself looking at the portraits first.
I love seeing the details the artists add, the way they structure the face & features, and especially how they incorporate their own creative style into the portraits they create.
I spent YEARS learning how to paint portraits of my own through in person classes, online classes, and books. NOW I want to show you everything I have learned so you can save yourself all of the time & struggle it took me to learn!

Throughout this process, I want to urge you to stay away from using words such as “good” or “bad” to describe your portrait art and art making in general. Instead let’s focus on using other adjectives to describe the outcome so that we can grow, learn, and self correct.

Module One - Introduction 4 Lessons Welcome to class! We cover all of the supplies you need to get started, as well as spending some time getting to know the supplies & diving into color mixing practice for our portraits!
Module Two - Mapping The Face 4 Lessons I like to show multiple different approaches to portrait painting. We will cover a variety of different ways to map out the face from a head on view, and even how to use the nose as a starting point before diving into drawing out the features.
Module Three - Adding Color 4 Lessons In these lessons you will learn how to use watercolor pencils as well as how to use watercolor paint to add color to your forward facing portrait sketches!
Module Four - 3/4 View Portraits 6 Lessons 3/4 view portraits are a popular style of portraits but offer a different set of challenges than head on portraits. In this module we cover how to sketch & paint 3/4 view portraits, and even how to re-do a portrait that went wrong!
Module Five - Profile Portraits 5 Lessons We will sketch out & paint a portrait from the side view, starting with mapping out the facial structure & features, and finishing with adding watercolor to make the portrait pop. We will also be adding in some floral detail with this one!
Module Six - More Practice 5 Lessons Learn how to incorporate backgrounds into your portrait paintings, how to create intuitively, and important next steps as you continue your portrait painting journey on your own!
